What’s Here?

The American Museum in Britain takes you on a journey through the history of America, from its early settlers to the 20th century.

With its remarkable collection of folk and decorative arts, the museum shows the diverse and complex nature of American culture.

The only museum of Americana outside the United States, the museum was founded to bring American history and cultures to the people of Britain and Europe.

The museum’s collection of furniture, paintings, quilts, silver and glass is presented in a series of period rooms within the historic Claverton Manor.

Our textile collection is on show in the Textile Room also in the manor house.

The new Folk Art Gallery, opened in 2011, beautifully displays the Museum’s extensive collection of American Folk Art.

New for 2012 will be two animated touch screens to extend the visitor’s enjoyment to this room.

In the basement is the permanent American Heritage Exhibition, which tells the stories of the Founding Fathers, Native Americans and the Civil War, through a series of interactive galleries that bring the development of America and American culture to life with bright and tactile exhibits - great for kids of all ages!

Each year a special temporary exhibition is on display in our Exhibition Gallery.  .

The museum is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with spectacular views over the valley of the River Avon. The grounds total some 120 acres, of which forty are open to visitors.
