Winter

The estate in winter

There is plenty to experience in the gardens during winter, which are full of frosty grasses and striking shapes set against spectacular misty valley views. Late sunrises and early sunsets give dramatic skies, while architectural trees, bare branches and crispy seedheads provide lots of interest for the senses. The gardening team leave all the herbaceous growth of the year standing across the borders, giving beautiful textures and colours for garden enthusiasts to enjoy while also ensuring best horticultural practice for our ecological goals. Insects can live in the standing stems over winter and the coverage of the ground helps to keep water in the soil.
