Summer Talk – A History of Gee’s Bend and its Community of Quilters
4 June | 11.30am
This illustrated talk describes the history of the 'Gees Benders' through slavery, abandonment, the depression of the 1930's, the New Deal, support from Martin Luther King Jr and the setting up of a successful Co-operative, finishing with recognition from the White House of Barack Obama.
Fresh from a recent visit to Gee’s Bend, the talk is given by Susan Hobson, a quilter, who has studied the journey of this community and amazing group of women for some 20 years or more.
This talk is the perfect accompaniment to a visit to our current exhibition, Kith & Kin: The Quilts of Gee’s Bend, which is on until 21 June.
